Minors in Communication

The JU Department of Communication offers three minors that enhance any degree program. The Minor in Communication (18 credits) is a highly flexible program that allows you to select courses tailored to your interest and major. The Minor in Strategic Social Media (18 credits) focuses on courses designed to provide you with the skills to produce, execute and analyze effective digital media communication. The Minor in Sport Communication (15 credits) is an interdisciplinary program that combines courses in Sport Business and Communication to prepare you for a career in the sports industry. Minor in Sport Communication *NEW*

Job opportunities are increasing in both the communication and sport industries. Students earning this interdisciplinary minor will explore sport as a business and learn to apply effective communication skills to the many aspects of the sports industry. The minor combines classes in Sport Business and Communication to prepare students for careers in a variety of sports-related areas.

The goals include strategic, deliberate, and effective communication that uses technology while: 

  • Developing an understanding of the business of sport administration
  • Developing an understanding of sport promotion and technology
  • Developing an understanding of effective social media strategies
  • Successfully producing and re-telling factual sport stories through the use of video
  • Writing sport copy for news and feature stories via mass media 
  • Implementing successful social media campaigns 
  • Utilizing multimedia communication plans for desired effect 
  • Creating compelling content for specific social media platforms 
  • Understanding how to collect and share data for ROI for social media

Communication majors may complete the Sport Communication Minor, but are required to successfully complete two additional COMM courses for a total of six credits beyond the core requirements for the major. Students may select COMM 307, COMM 310, or COMM 332 in place of COMM 207. Students must complete COMM 331 if COMM 325 is counting towards the completion of the COMM major. 

Sport Business majors may count SPO 300 and SPO 370 towards the Sport Communication minor. Sport Business majors are required to successfully complete nine additional hours in Communication with the following courses: COMM 207, COMM 217, and COMM 325. 

Minor in Strategic Social Media

Social media is an increasingly important skill in the job market. As a personal promotion tool, it is imperative as more than 90 percent of companies are using social media for hiring. Additionally, social media literacy, search engine optimization, data mining, and visualization are among the top skills desired by employers.

The Minor in Strategic Social Media focuses on the art and craft of communication in a social media society.  Students participating in the minor program will learn how to communicate successfully through a variety of social media platforms. The goals include strategic, deliberate, and effective communication that uses technology while

  • Developing and understanding effective social media strategies
  • Implementing successful social media campaigns
  • Utilizing multimedia communication plans for desired effect
  • Creating compelling content for specific social media platforms
  • Understanding how to collect and share data for ROI for social media

To earn a minor is Strategic Social Media, students must complete four required courses (12 credits), and two COMM electives selected with the assistance of a communication faculty member.

COMM Majors may not minor in Strategic Social Media, but they may earn the Certificate in Strategic Social Media.

Minor in Communication

No matter what career path you choose, knowing how to effectively communicate is an essential skill. Students choosing to minor in communication can customize their learning experience by selecting courses and practicums that are relevant to their major. Additionally, students earning a minor in communication are encouraged to participate in the variety of student media and professional development organizations in the Department of Communication. This practical experience in story telling about their major provides valuable portfolio pieces, as well as a deeper understanding of the principles learned in class.

To earn a minor in Communication, students must complete 18 credit hours of COMM courses selected with the assistance of a communication faculty member.
