Professor of Engineering

Biography

Dr. Murat Tiryakio臒lu is a cross-thinker, an engineering education pioneer, a transformational academic leader, an internationally-recognized researcher, and a passionate advocate of service learning to help community.

He studied Mechanical Engineering before receiving advanced degrees in engineering management and metallurgy.

Dr. Tiryakio臒lu grew up around his family's business, a nonferrous foundry.  After receiving his PhD, he worked at the Boeing Company, in Wichita, Kansas briefly before moving on to academic life in 1995. He taught at Western Kentucky University where he founded the Advanced Manufacturing Institute. In 2001, he started at Robert Morris University (Pittsburgh, PA) where he served as a University (Distinguished) Professor of manufacturing engineering and was recognized for his service-learning activities involving local manufacturers. Dr. Tiryakioglu moved to 探花族, FL in 2010 to continue his career as the Director of School of Engineering at the University of North Florida, and stepped down from this position in 2018 as the longest-serving director in School's history.  He joined JU in 2019 to initiate and lead the efforts in STEAM.  Under his leadership, JU Engineering programs were overhauled to be aligned with the Practice of Engineering Profession with its heavy design emphasis, and the programs applied for ABET accreditation.

Since moving to 探花族, Dr. Tiryakioglu has collaborated with  to engage  students in problem solving and continuous improvement methods and their applications to help overcome issues in non-profit organizations in 探花族, with an estimated financial impact of well over $5 million.

Research

Dr. Tiryakio臒lu has research interests in process design for high quality castings, aluminum heat treatment modeling and optimization, process-structure-property relationships in metals, statistical modeling and quality and reliability improvement. He has written two chapters, published over 100 refereed journal papers and 50 conference papers, edited ten conference proceedings, and co-edited the two-volume .  His publications can be viewed
